Arthur is floundering emotionally but somehow he's connected with Merlin and had found a bit of happiness in the tentative new friendship. Walking in on him and Gwaine cast a spotlight on something Arthur wants to remain hidden in the shadows. It's no wonder he's so shut down and can't face Merlin. Merlin's leading a life that Arthur is denying himself. His life is unbearably sad, though he'd deny how awful it is.
